JOE DEMARTINI BIO

Joseph DeMartini, born in 1927. At his death in 2019 Joseph De Martini became the last artist from the golden age of pinup art illustration. the only pinup artist known to be assisted and mentored by Alberto Vargas. They remain friends of over 35 years until Alberto Vargas death in 1982. Mr. DeMartini as the best student of Alberto Vargas, had a photographic memory of names and images. He became the most knowledgeable Alberto Vargas art historian and was a walking encyclopedia of Vargas history and works. . Though Vargas was rather exclusive as an artist and notably did not share his unique painting techniques and mediums he had developed, in the 1950’s Joseph DeMartini was taught the exclusive and secret Vargas technique and mediums. Though the artist met means other artists, no other artist had this unique access and privilege. Joseph painted actively from the 1950's through 1980s. Then Brought out of Simi-simi-retirement to paint again in the early 2000's by Daniel Vancas of Vanguard Gallery to paint select commissions. Vanguard Gallery acquired all of his best Vintage paintings and drawings, along with exclusive representational and art publishing agreements starting in 2001.

PIN-UPS nudes and illustrations are rare and highly desirable and raising in valuve at auctions. Historically art departments for pinup advertisers as well as most movie companies, advertisers, pulp, calendar, and magazines would routinely throw away older art archives. In this way many artist's illustration work was lost at a rate of 40 to as much as 95%, leaving the old paper printed materials as the only lasting image. However This rare painting survived! This was in private collection for years and this is the first time offered here!
