Since 1994, this is the first time they have been offered for sale to anyone!

Only a couple of people knew of their existence and this art history.

Here is the info on these two 1940's - 50's Hollywood Night Club Burlesque Paintings.

It will be fun for you to match up a performer to the paintings with studio pinup and headshots of the times. I have seen photos of these pinup models and performers before, so it will not be too hard ... JUST LOOK THROUGH BURLESQUE BOOKS OF THE 1940'S AND 50'S

RARE HOLLYWOOD NIGHT CLUB BURLESQUE PAINTINGS - HISTORY:

Here is a back story on these they hung in a famous Hollywood celebrity hang out of the 40s and 50s, I know many stars, like Lana, Lucy and Desi, Frank and the Rat pack, etc, came there...It was named something like The Kit Kat Club, or Pussy Kat Club or some such, I forgot to write the name down. I have spoken to two people who have been there, to this club in the 1950s and 60s and remembered the art. One even could describe some that I have from memory, as he said by the late '50s and early 60's they were everywhere in the club and that they hired a well-known artist to paint all the favorite performers through the years... but he could not remember the name of the artist. He came back and I showed him a few... and he said that I had the ones he remembered, he wanted to buy them right there! But I felt that I needed to wait as the pinup values were just starting to grow and I wanted to find out more about the artist, but I never did... This was in the 1990s, he has not returned to the gallery, as he was late 60's or maybe 70 then, maybe he moved or passed on.

When the Club closed down maybe early 70's? The entire collection was bought and ended up in an east side LA bar ... over the next 2 decades that bar turned from a bad to worse and was ultimately a rough biker bar. Many of the paintings damaged through time abuse, knife stabs, bar fights and broken bottles and booze.. the entire collection was being thrown away when the old biker bar, now derelict and long closed was being cleaned out by the owners of the property, a young man working for the owners asked for the paintings that he was told to put in the dumpster. Some of the paintings were torn and pealing beyond recognition and destroyed, he threw them away then. The rest, many badly damaged, he cut and pulled them off the stretcher bars then and there and rolled them up and stored them for another 10-15 years. in 1994 he came in my gallery and unrolled for the first time the whole collection of about 20 paintings. I looked at them and because of the peeling paint and with bad damage, I said that they were not worth recovery. All the paintings were unsigned. I bought 5 of the best ones in the best condition. I recognized several of the old burlesque performers not by name but by the appearance from old pinup photos. In 1994 (Unfortunately I didn't buy them all?) I told him that rest would not be worth restoring, because of the cost. The then young man who recovered them has never returned to my gallery and said he would most likely throw the remaining paintings away.

IN 1994 I did not know the likely hood that Earl Moran, Loomis, Willis, the Runci's, Zoe Mozert or Ted Withers and several other pinup and figure artists could have painted these as many were under contract on pinups for B&B (preventing or avoiding conflict in agreements on side works) and lived/worked in Hollywood area at the time. By then for them to paint pinup would clash with agreements and so many pinup artists (Elvgren included) like Moran, Willis... Yet still DID extra work, often left it unsigned or made up fake names to put on the art for extra money... Such as my Elvgren signed "Winn" or others simply not signed at all, such as the famous "Moonlight and Roses" by Elvgren.

On review... These look to be the work of Earl Moran or maybe Loomis to me...
