ART by MAYBEL ROLLIN HARRIS from RARE ORIGINAL VINTAGE PASTEL

From the late 1920s until the end of the 1930s, Harris' fine art pastels were among the most feminine and expressive in the calendar trade. Her great Art Deco pin-ups told of romantic themes and fantasies from the feminine perspective, and were popular during the era. She was known for spectacular nudes which were kept in the catalog of the JC Hoover calendar advertising company for seven consecutive years.

Rollins' three pin-ups for the Thomas D. Murphy Company during the late 1920s aroused the admiration of Rolf Armstrong, who told the firm's art director that he thought she was amazing talent, in particular he ability to use brilliant glow and softness of her finished pastels. Of her pin-ups during the 1930s for the Gertach-Barklow Calendar Company, the most successful was another nude, seated in the moonlight on a rock surrounded by deep blue water.

She continued to work on such non-pin-up themes, where her series depicting young girls in idyllic gardens was a greatly sough after.

Because of her soft technique of Harris' pastels, her work was extremely popular in the ad art, illustration and publishing companies. Important magazines like The Saturday Evening Post commissioned her for their covers. She also did freelance work for the Rustcraft and Norcross greeting card companies from secular to religious and Christmas subjects.

One of the finest female illustrator of the Art Deco era, Harris had her pin-up nudes and glamour art reproduced on millions of calendars. Her sentimental non-pin-up subjects were used for years on puzzles, fans, decorations and presentation candy boxes.
